After months of speculation and debate it has been revealed that the sale of travel insurance through travel agents will definitely regulated by the FSA (Financial Services Authority). For years now the travel agencies have managed to avoid travel insurance regulation by the FSA.

The decision does not force travel agencies to enrol FSA status, they can still opt for the perfectly legitimate authorised representative label which essential means they can obtain travel insurance regulation by getting the FSA authorised underwriter to sponsor them a authorised representatives.

The decision to make this formality compulsory comes as a result of a lot of press in relation to travel agents not offering the correct information to consumers purchasing cover with their holiday packages.

With travel insurance regulation in place there is confidence that the intermediary service will be improved but there are sceptics who believe the additional script and information that will have to be offered to the customer might put a lot of punters off the idea of taking the additional insurance protection. There is still a long way to go in preparing the change which is planned to come in the early part of 2009
