The ABI (Association of British Insurers) and ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) have together refused to accept the conclusions of a Parliamentary committee who effectively demanded that pressure and reform be applied to the travel industry following persistent attacks and reports over the way travel insurance has being sold to the general public.

They are concerned that many people have been sold travel insurance without adequate medical cover including many who were sold insurance policies without any medical expenses cover where acts of terrorism are to blame. This in turn has put pressure on the Government to take action.

The Association of British Insurers have argued that any dealings with the FSA (Financial Services Authority) would create intolerable administration and suggested such processes should be review for consideration for Trading Standards to intervene.

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) also commented that over half of all travel insurance policies sold already have terrorism cover built in and it was only a choice few that didn’t have that specific cover. They did agree however that cover for acts of terrorism should become compulsory for travel insurance polices.

It was clearly a case that the issues lie with how the insurance policies are being sold and the fact that the reseller is not informing the consumer of exactly what is and isn’t covered.
