Online Insurance up for Debate

Added - 03/02/2007

There are growing concerns within the insurance industry in the way insurance is being sold online. There are some pretty hefty requirements and terms to be adhered to when insurance policies are purchased. When the consumer is seen face to face or spoken to over the phone the sales advisor is able to ensure compliance with FSA regulations and the customer is deemed to have been properly informed of all the logistics and terms involved especially when it comes to finance and credit terms.

The problem faced is the reality that whilst terms and conditions and other important information can be presented to the consumer online they simply cannot guarantee that the consumer actually reads it at all. Let’s face it, common sense tells us that the majority of viewers and consumers are not going to read the fine print, they simply scroll through the waffle and ticks the box at the end that says ‘accept’.

Whilst there is the argument that this is down to the consumer and if worst comes to worst it is their fault if things back fire we all know that this will not be the case if a court has to decide and if a solicitor gets his hands on the case then go help the insurance provider who sold the policy. There is a more sensible solution and that is a review of some documentation in order to simplify the policy wordings however this only goes some of the way in appeasing the FSA and sceptics to the World Wide Web and its potential for buying online. The fact is guys the internet is the future and commerce has to embrace the technology that will create the future market place.
