Contrary to popular belief the phrase knock for knock does not refer to motorists agreeing between themselves that they will sort their damages through their own insurance policies. Whilst this does happen it is pretty rare and in many accidents there can be contentions over responsibility.
Knock for knock is an agreement made between insurance companies where they agree to look after their own policy holders irrespective as to whom was responsible. This can only occur where the insurance cover itself covers damage to the motor vehicle. Where there is an indication of fault however the injured party can claim recovery of the excess payment they have to fork out to their insurer.
This knock for knock agreement works for some insurers but not for all, there are companies who have backed out of the agreement and now remain independent of it, preferring instead to take steps in offering professional advice on how to claim from the third party.
As the car insurance market continues to get tighter on the purse strings for the insurers there will no doubt be further discussion and debate over the issue of the knock for knock agreement that is for sure
