Car Insurance Groups to Change

The age old car insurance groups that are part and parcel of determining how a car insurance quote is calculated are set to change over the next couple of years.

Under the current regime the car insurance groups system is integral to how global quote engines function and ranges from 1 to 20 with more expensive and high powered motor vehicles falling in the higher numbered car insurance groups. Under the the new system the groupings will increase to 50 allowing for more differentiation in engine technologies that have developed far faster than the insurance process.

The Association of British Insurers ABI has hinted that this move if administered correctly will allow the motor insurance industry to hit profits that have been missing in motor insurance since the mid nineties.

The new group insurance rating system will be far reaching in respect of the fact more considerations will be bought into the equation. Such things as cost of spare parts and damage repair time will be taken into consideration and whilst individual car insurance premiums will be effected the the ABI believes the overall average premium will be unaffected.
