Traditionally associated as the high street business, insurance brokers are more realistically virtual or call centre based now we are in the 21st century. Selling products ranging from car insurance and home insurance through to life polices they are a breed of business that haven’t had it easy to so the least over the past few decades and they have had to learn to adapt new business styles and practices on a number of occasions in order to commercially survive.
Insurance brokers undoubtedly met their most demanding challenge during the mid to late eighties when Direct Line re-wrote the art of selling car insurance through the media of large scale call centres. This era rewrote the way car insurance companies operated throughout Britain. Out of this period many were to give up the ghost, some amalgamated and other insurance brokers just struggled and persevered. Effectively selling insurance on behalf of the actual underwriter the broker is the public face that tries through their own marketing means to sell the insurance companies cover.
Whilst many insurance brokers will brand their broker insurance as their own they are in effect an affinity that will sell insurance cover provided by a insurance underwriter, the company that does take the ultimate risk in providing insurance cover for the consumer. Despite the commercial and environmental challenges presented the insurance brokers have proved to be a strong breed that still control much of the consumer market.
The current climate is definitely blowing another wind of change as the world wide web and internet set new precedents in marketing. There are another breed on the block too insurance aggregators who are undoubtably gathering consumer attention - will the insurance brokers survive this new climate, only time will tell. Motorists and home owners alike are used to the broker infact if we look across the water to France the French motorists have a unique style in the fact they use the power of the internet to find the best rates then go to their own insurance brokers to try and get a price match.
