Been Stung by Car Cloning?
Added - 12/11/2006

Over the past few years a problem has occurred that involves motor vehicles in the UK been themselves subject to car cloning. By this we mean cars have effectively had their identity duplicated by the simplest means possible having their vehicle identity plates duplicated and then placed on a car of the same identity.

Having your number plates (VRM) duplicated and placed on an identical vehicle then allows that person(s) to use the vehicle on the road either for legitimate day to day use or for means more foul, in both cases this is totally illegal and effectively car cloning. Some people might use this method to avoid having to pay for car insurance or in some cases to commit crime.

New methods and technologies available to the police allow them to check vehicles by scanning their number plates and checking them against databases. The trouble with this method is that if the cloned vehicle is totally road legal and covered by car insurance then the duplicate car is also going to appear the same.

To help curb the problem of car cloning the DVLA has implemented some measures to help address the problem. As of January 2003 all retail number plate suppliers must be registered with the DVLA and all transactions and sales must be recorded but this doesn’t stop the problem of rogue traders or in some cases number plates being stolen for the purpose of car cloning.

When you consider the problem deeper you can appreciate how this might impact on you. If your car has been the chosen for car cloning by individuals or criminal gangs then you might then be liable to receive fixed penalties, speeding camera fines or visits from the police about offences that might be committed involving the vehicle from the car cloning. If this does happen to you can contact the DVLA and the Police immediately and inform them of the situation. In exceptional cases the DVLA can issue new vehicle identities.
