How Much is That Insurance Call Costing You

Call Centre Rip Off

Doesn't it make you mad when you can always get through to a sales person in seconds but find yourself hanging on the phone line for what seems like hours when you want after sales support.

Well it should come as no surprise to know that this is well established business strategy many companies adopt in order to profit from, and the world of car insurance call centres is no exception.

Like many other industries a lot of car insurance call centres publish 0800 free phone numbers in order to attract you for the new business they want from you and very often the business policy and procedure is to answer those calls as if their life depended on it. However once they have your business it seems like they couldn't care less about how long it takes to answer the phone.

More often than not there is simple a reason behind this and that is they can make money by leaving you hanging on the phone because yes, all those renewal, customer service and general enquiry lines are usually 0870, 0844 or some other weird configurations. What these numbers actually do is generate income for them, the longer you are on the phone the more they make. Isn't it also surprising that when you call these numbers they are answered instantly, but not by a human but the dreaded auto-attendant.

Once your call has been answered by the auto-attendant you are connected and of course paying the price of patience. In some cases you might as well go and take a bath, make the tea or watch your favourite program before human intervention comes in to play. One of the most despicable tactics adopted by some companies is when you think you have been smart enough to ring them on their 0800 number they just tell you have to ring back on the correct number (the one, that makes them money) even though the person you want in more often than not sat feet just away.

Recently a number of large companies were named and shamed for over charging customers on these 08 numbers, many of them were 'reputable' car insurance call centres.
